April 5, 2012 (DES MOINES, IOWA) – Know yourself. Know your status. Get yourself tested.

April is Get Yourself Tested (GYT) Month. Planned Parenthood of the Heartland is partnering with health care providers across the country to raise awareness, encourage testing and provide comprehensive sexual health information for men and women of all ages.

“Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health issue,” said Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Health Educator Jenna Carlson.

“One in 2 sexually active young people will get an STI by the time they are 25. Without testing, many will not know their status.”

About 19 million new cases of STI’s are reported each year; costing an estimated 17 billion dollars in medical expenses.

GYT Month is a reminder for people of all ages to get yourself tested and get yourself talking.

“Fear is the primary reason many young people do not get tested,” said Carlson. “In reality, STI testing is easy and pain free; a simple urine sample is all that’s needed.”

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland also offers Rapid HIV testing, which enables a patient to be tested and know their status in under 30 minutes.

STIs and HIV affect people of all races, ages and sexual orientation. Regular testing, preventive services and healthy decision-making are key to curbing the staggering number of new infections each year.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland offers STI and HIV testing at all 31 health centers throughout Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
