Portland, OR – November 22, 2010 – Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette (PPCW) today celebrates the successful completion of the five year, $12.5 million Let’s Build fundraising campaign, dedicating the new Regional Service Center (RSC) building to Elizabeth Flanagan. Funds raised were composed of $2 million in board designated endowment, $1.5 million in New Markets Tax Credits, and approximately $9 million in new, private gifts. The three-story, 42,000 square foot, LEED Certified building on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. is now home to PPCW’s administrative staff and a new, state-of-the-art NE Portland health center.

Donors at all levels and incomes helped contribute to the new facility, with gifts ranging from $5 to $750,000, showing the depth of community support for the organization. John Gray, Christine and David Vernier, Lynn and Jack Loacker, the Saltzman family, Evans Van Buren, Susan Hammer, and William Haden were among the generous supporters who made individual gifts of $250,000 or more. Many of Portland’s major philanthropic institutions, including the Collins Foundation, HEDCO Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, Schnitzer Care Foundation, and the Spirit Community Fund also made significant gifts.

PPCW’s Elizabeth Flanagan Regional Service Center honors the late Elizabeth Flanagan, who died in April 2009 following a nearly three-year battle with ovarian cancer. Flanagan served on PPCW’s Board of Directors from 1988 to 1994, as Board President from 1990-1993, and as a member of the Let’s Build Capital Campaign Committee to build support for PPCW’s Regional Service Center. John Gray, William Haden, and other friends and family contributed more than $800,000 toward this project in her name. Elizabeth Flanagan is lovingly remembered by friends, family and the entire PPCW community through the naming of this building.

The LEED Certified building was designed by Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects, and constructed by B&G Builders, Inc. The building displays an outstanding collection of local art contributed by collectors and artists. The collection features a many of the region’s foremost artists, including Christine Bourdette, Adriene Cruz, Sean Healy, Lee Kelly, Manya Shapiro, Arvie Smith, and others.

“The timing of the campaign created both interesting challenges and unforeseen benefits for us,” said Susan Hammer, PPCW Let’s Build Campaign Committee Chair. Not long after launching the campaign, and just as PPCW broke ground on the new building, the recent economic recession began to set in. The worsening economy affected the availability of grants and the capacity of donors, but at the same time lowered the cost of the construction project.  “I’m so thankful to our campaign committee members and donors who persevered and never gave up hope that this project would become a reality,” said Hammer.

“We are tremendously grateful for Susan Hammer’s leadership as chair of this campaign, as well as for her personal generosity,” said David Greenberg, PPCW President & CEO. “This building truly would not have been built without Susan’s leadership and passion for Planned Parenthood’s mission to ensure that every child is born wanted and loved.”

With the help of the new Regional Service Center, Planned Parenthood is poised to serve more patients this year than ever before. The new NE Portland health center has doubled PPCW’s capacity to serve patients in NE Portland. The Regional Service Center has also become an important resource to the wider community through the use of its large board room for community meetings and events.

The Let’s Build Campaign will formally end on Dec. 31, 2010. Anyone wishing to make a final gift to the project should contact Susanne Hashim at or call 503.280.6157.
