2008 PPFA Volunteer of the Year

Karen Campbell, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPW)

Karen has served as a frontline volunteer, wearing many hats — educator, escort, tabler, and door-knocker — for each of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin's core service areas (education, patient services, and public affairs) and has led PPW ably as board chair. Karen's commitment to the Planned Parenthood mission and steadfast involvement for more than 10 years has contributed to PPW's success and has been an inspiration to others. Her continued and intensive involvement with annual fundraising, event planning, and capital campaign planning has been invaluable to PPW's development efforts. Her leadership, energy, and commitment have set an excellent example to other volunteers, staff, and board members.

2008 PPFA Young Volunteer of the Year

Harrison Pride, Planned Parenthood of the Columbia/Willamette (PPCW)

Harrison has been a key member of the PPCW Teen Council Peer Education Program in Bend, Oregon, since 2005, but his commitment to health care began when he saw the movie Patch Adams. Harrison began a correspondence with Patch Adams and recently joined Patch and a team of physicians, other providers, and medical clowns on a visit to Ecuador and Russia. During their travels they performed in medical facilities in both countries. Harrison, also known as Flappage the Clown, plans to be a doctor and believes that combining humor and medicine is the key to succeeding as a healer. Throughout Bend, Harrison has been a force in the promotion of sexual and reproductive health knowledge. In his school and social circles he is well-known as a safe and confidential resource for his peers who need reassurance and information. He is known around town as "Condom Man," not only providing condoms for those who ask, but also information and direct links to Planned Parenthood health services. His passion is contagious, and he inspires others to become informed, make wise decisions, and support reproductive rights.
