PPFA is dedicated to overcoming barriers to accessing reproductive health services and exercising reproductive rights by empowering this generation and the next, worldwide.
Since 1971, Planned Parenthood has been working internationally to ensure the reproductive health and rights of women and their families in some of the poorest places in the world. We are proud to be taking the Planned Parenthood mission global, supporting local organizations in developing countries that offer reproductive health services, and fighting for policies that promote women's health and improve quality of life.
Despite tremendous advances in medicine, more than 500,000 women — most in developing countries — die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth, while hundreds of millions more suffer from sexual violence and sexually transmitted infections. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) International Program addresses these challenges through innovative projects throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Our Approach
Planned Parenthood provides small grants and assistance in capacity building to help partner organizations in developing countries increase access to reproductive health care. Through regular site visits and ongoing communication, our staff provide in-depth technical assistance to our partners on how to design and implement programs, improve quality of care, use medical technology, conduct advocacy, establish effective organizational and fiscal management systems, and generate revenue. These efforts lead to increased financial, institutional, and program sustainability. Over the years, we have helped numerous projects grow from ideas shared by a few passionate people to full-fledged, self-sustaining organizations.
Our Priorities
The PPFA International Program works to build movements that promote and protect the reproductive health and rights of vulnerable women and young people. Our work focuses on
- expanding access to reproductive health services, including family planning and safe abortion
- advocating for expanded reproductive rights through country-specific and U.S.-based efforts
- reaching communities that are most often underserved or disadvantaged, including young people and indigenous, tribal, and low-caste groups
- integrating reproductive health into other aspects of development work, such as environmental conservation, microfinance, and education
