Intersections of Public Health, Healthy Sexuality & Social Justice
Summary: PPWI Community Education will host its second annual statewide conference dedicated to increasing the capacity of professionals to address issues around sexuality and sexual health. This 2-day long conference includes a diverse offering of workshops to explore the intersections of public health, healthy sexuality and social justice. Workshops tracks include cultural competency, individual and community empowerment, and addressing the social determinants of sexual and reproductive health. Introductory level and advance practice level workshops will be offered for professionals with a range of knowledge and skill levels. Additionally, there will be a keynote speaker, poster presentations, resource tables and networking opportunities with other professionals. Continuing education credits and units will be offered for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES), social workers and nurses.
Audience: Educators, public health workers, program managers, school nurses, other health care professionals, youth workers and other community members responsible for providing sexuality education (80-100).
Workshop Presenters: Experts, researchers, and community leaders from local and state organizations and agencies as well as PPWI Community Education, Public Affairs and Patient Services staff.
Goal: To increase the comfort level and competence of professionals to effectively address various sexuality issues, such as sexual and reproductive health and sexual orientation and gender identity, through approaches that utilize public health research and social justice principals.
- Participants will be able to list various components of culturally competent programs and interventions with successful sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
- Participants will be able to identify effective processes for enhancing individual and community empowerment for improved individual and population-level sexual and reproductive health outcomes.
- Participants will be able to identify multiple social determinants of sexual and reproductive health and successful programs and interventions to address these determinants.
Dates & Times: May 2-3, 2013 from 9am-5pm each day
Cost: $250.00 ($50 student registration). Includes light breakfast and lunch each day.
