Statement on Closure of Four Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Health Centers

Every day our team of health care professionals provides our patients with essential health care services. Services that include cancer screenings, wellness exams, birth control, testing and treatment of STDs, and referrals to a network of providers across Wisconsin.

For more than 77 years Planned Parenthood has been here for those in need of quality, affordable health care to keep them safe, healthy and strong.

Nearly 80,000 people cross through our doors each year to receive life-saving, preventive and diagnostic reproductive health care. Yet, there are still 165,000 Wisconsin women who are in need of these same services and go without care.

Despite this critical unmet need, last year Governor Walker and members of the state Legislature chose to end state funding for low income women seeking health care at Planned Parenthood.

While Planned Parenthood worked hard to minimize the impact of those funding cuts on our patients, we are now left with no choice other than to close four health centers. These four health centers provide essential health care services for approximately 2,000 patients in the communities of Beaver Dam, Chippewa Falls, Johnson Creek, and Shawano. These four health centers will close between April and July 2013.

The politicians who voted to end funding for patient care at Planned Parenthood may have turned their backs on those who are in need of health care. Planned Parenthood will not. We understand the importance of essential and quality health care and will continue providing health care for people in 23 health centers across the state.

We do this because we are a non-profit health care provider that cares deeply about helping women, men and young people lead healthy lives.

We are unwavering in our belief that all people deserve high quality, affordable health care. And we will be tireless in our efforts to achieve that vision.

This is Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. We invite all of you who share our vision to join with us as our patient, donor or voice in your community and make us YOUR Planned Parenthood.
